November 2019 Newsletter

Dear Students, Families and Friends,

I hope our November newsletter finds you and your family well!

Thank you to our parents/guardians, students, faculty, police and fire departments for ALL of the effort placed into supporting our Homecoming event on October 19th. If you have not done so already, we would really like to hear your feedback, here.

The Massachusetts Department of Elementary (MDESE) has officially released our 2019 MCAS results. Shifts in rigor and testing platform uncovered areas where we will need to place particular attention. Specifically, ensuring that students fully understand the accessible tools and operation of the testing platform. Educators are reviewing the correlation between standards and specific cohorts of students. This will allow educators to identify areas of need and adjust curriculum where required. You can find more information on the next generation MCAS and gain greater insight: HERE.

The Smith Academy School Council met last week and made the first steps toward creating the School Improvement Plan and areas of focus for Smith Academy. The next meeting is scheduled for December 4th and all are welcome to attend. Input will be sought from all stakeholders through questionnaires. Parents are also welcome to speak with me specifically about school issues during my regular monthly drop-ins.

Also this month, the district launched its Facebook pages. Smith Academy’s page can be found here. Please follow us in order to become a part of day-to-day Smith Academy life. We will continue to communicate via email, too.

Finally, it is incredibly inspiring to see that three of our Fall sports teams have made tournament this year: Girls’ Soccer, Boys’ Soccer and Girls’ Field Hockey. I want to thank the students for all of their hard work so far and wish them luck in their upcoming fixtures. I would also like to recognize and show my appreciation to families and coaches for their tireless and ongoing support in their success.

Please find below upcoming dates and events for November.

Best
