SA closed until April 6th - Continuity of Education/ Extension work

As a precaution against the spread of Coronavirus, SA will be closing until April 6th

Dear Parents/Guardians,

As you are aware by now, Governor Baker announced as a precautionary measure that public schools will be closed until April 6th. This email is to let you know how teachers are planning to provide opportunities for all students to continue their education and how and when they will communicate this to you.

On Monday and Tuesday, Smith Academy staff will be preparing enrichment activities for your children to work on during the time school is closed. These will be optional activities that allow students to practice previously learned material as well as extension task suggestions. By Wednesday 18th, students and families will be notified via parent portals of:

  • Exactly what sort of enrichment activities will be offered in each subject
  • How students can access these activities - through google classroom/ docs/ hangouts, or if someone has to come in to school to collect a physical packet
  • How and when students can communicate with teachers about these enrichment activities/ extension tasks

Next Steps

  • I would encourage all students to create a schedule of 3 - 4 hours a day, in order to try to maintain a connection with their different content areas
  • Try to encourage all students to build in some outside time for fresh air/ physical activity & eat a balanced diet
  • Encourage students to join/participate in virtual hangouts with classmates from SA, as a way of maintaining social connections
  • Build in specific points in the day when students are not on a screen
  • Ms Anderson will contact students on a 504 plan about counseling services
  • The SPED dept will contact students on IEPs about enrichment activities.

Free Resources

If you are looking for additional academic opportunities, here are some free resources to have a look at:

Quarter 3 Grades & Q4

We are almost at the end of Q 3 and hope to try to close this, as planned by April 3rd. Whilst teachers will not be setting new work for the Q, students will be permitted to make-up existing work for this Q. Please contact subject teachers on an individual basis after checking plus portals. We are awaiting advice from DESE on how we should proceed with Q4.

MCAS/ AP/ SAT/ Graduation

We are unclear what will happen with MCAS, AP and SAT testing and will communicate what we receive to you as soon as we hear anything. That being said, it would be prudent for AP students to talk directly with their teachers about the exact nature of their extension/enrichment activities, as these are content heavy classes. Class advisors will keep the class of 2020 informed about Graduation.

Retrieval of materials from SA

Monday 16th March (Today) is the only day that students will be allowed in to the building to retrieve belongings, should they need to do so. After this, only authorized personnel will have access.

I am sure that there are many unanswered questions at the moment and I thank you in advance for your flexibility and patience. As soon as we know more, we will communicate this to you all.

Please feel free to email me at any time and I will do my best to reply to you in a timely manner.

Wishing you all the best

Sincerely

Chris Buckland
