Happy New Year!

Greetings Smith Academy Community, and happy August.

I hope everyone has had a relaxing and fun summer full of outdoor adventure and time with family and friends. Before we know it, we’ll be starting the 2022/23 school year. Fall sports will be rolling, and we’ll be right back at it.

Students begin class on Thursday, 9/1/22. Staff will be working the three days prior to make sure all the last details are ironed out and set to go. We’ll be focusing much of our professional work this year on cooperative learning opportunities across disciplines, and building upon the project-based learning training that has been done in years past.

New students to Smith Academy this year should have received an invitation to an orientation next Friday, 8/26/22 at 12:00. If you did not receive an invitation, please reach out to the school to let us know.

We are welcoming 4 new staff members this year:

- Ms. Moira Pitrat will be joining us as a high school science teacher.

- Mr. Ramesh Rajballie will be joining us as a high school social studies teacher.

- Mr. Samuel Bill will be joining us as a high school math teacher.

- Mr. John DiGangi will be joining us as the Smith Academy physical education teacher.

We are also pleased to be bringing back two x-block periods this year. Students will be able to choose their x-block classes from a variety of options when school begins on 9/1.

CREW will also be replaced with an “advisory” block this year. This block will be shorter in duration, and will meet daily for 14 minutes. The goal of this time will be to provide all students with SEL supports, and to continue to build community within Smith Academy. We will also be moving to a 7-day rotating schedule which will allow classes to meet more consistently, allowing for more regular academic class meetings, and a more steady daily schedule. This will be reviewed with all students on 9/1/22.

Students at the high school level should be prepared with a binder, or section of a binder for each class, and with writing utensils daily. Middle school students and parents can use this letter as a reference for supplies. Individual high school class needs will be communicated by teachers. Please note that we have been experiencing technology issues with our database which has made it impossible for teachers to email students and families of their students for the 2022/23 school year. Likewise, it has made it impossible to send all-school emails to current students. Our IT department has been working diligently to fix that issue for the last week and a half, and anticipates a solution shortly.

Lastly, there have been updates to the student handbook for the 2022/23 school year. They can be reviewed using this link. Changes are highlighted in yellow. Of particular interest may be the changes to the dress code found on pages 48 and 49.

Take care, we look forward to seeing all of you in two weeks!

Sincerely,

Conor Driscoll, Ed.D.
