School Committee Updates Multi-year Plan

I’d like to start off by congratulating both the Smith Academy Boys and Girls Varsity Soccer Teams for making tournament play.  The Smith Academy Field Hockey Team ended the season with a 3-13-2 record.  This was a rebuilding year for the team and I have no doubt they will be back next year and in contention. I also would like to recognize the Smith Academy Golf Team for a hard fought season as well.

The Hatfield School Committee has been very busy this past fall reviewing and updating the multi-year capital needs plan for the school district. The plan, which was approved at the November School Committee meeting, calls for the eventual renovation of the Abarno Library at Smith Academy, as well as, the possible relocation and upgrade of the current band room at Smith Academy.

Other improvements in the plan include the repaving of the Smith Academy parking lot, upgrades to the computer lab, and the replacement of some of the older equipment in the kitchen.  Planned improvements at the elementary school include upgrading the sound quality in the cafeteria and continued improvements to the playground area. The replacement of the telephone system in both schools, the acquisition of a new school van, and the implementation of the technology renewal plan is also being recommended.

In order to implement the five-year plan, multiple funding sources will be necessary. Possible funding sources may include capital articles, grants, donations, as well as, the use of various school revolving accounts.

There are many wonderful events planned at both schools for the holiday season. The Smith Academy Band Concert and Art Show will take place on December 10 at 7 pm in the Sherry A Webb Gymnasium and the HES Winter Concert is scheduled for December 19 at 1 pm at the Hatfield Elementary School. The Hatfield Education Foundation is also sponsoring a trip to New York City on December 6 to raise money to fund grants that help our schools. Call Kathy at 247-5067 for tickets.  Please come out and support our students.

Thank You and Happy Holidays,

John F. Robert
