Hatfield Public Schools Procedures and Guidelines for School Councils

School Council Objectives:

  1. Adopting educational goals for the school that are consistent with local educational policies and statewide student performance standards

  2. Identifying the educational needs of students attending the school

  3. Reviewing the annual school building budget

  4. Formulating a school improvement plan

Membership:

  • Nominations for parent/guardian representatives will be accepted both electronically and in paper form beginning the first day of the new school year and up until the Friday of the third full week of school. Elections for parent/guardian representatives will be held on the last school day in September each year via electronic vote.

  • Nominations and elections for staff members will follow the same schedule as outlined for parents.

Hatfield Elementary: will have 1 staff member representing grades k-3, 1 staff member representing grades 4-6, 1 parent representing K-3 and 1 parent representing grades 4-6, 1 community member and the principal.

Smith Academy: will have 1 staff member representing the middle school, 1 staff member representing the high school, 1 parent representing the middle school and 1 parent representing the high school, a community member and the principal. Smith Academy will also have 1 student representative.

  • The principal will appoint a community representative by October 1st.

  • Meetings will be held 4 times a year; October, January, March and May at a mutually agreed upon time outside of the school day.

  • Members of school councils are considered public officials and are subject to Massachusetts open meeting laws, code of ethics and CORI.
