Launch of 988 for Mental Health Emergencies

July 16.  We've all learned that the first steps in any emergency are to recognize and respond by calling 911 for police, fire, and/or emergency medical service response.  Millions of lives have been saved thanks to the nationwide 911 system.

Today, a new nationwide emergency response system is launched:  988.

Our friends at HEADS Up tell us that the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline is more than just an easy-to-remember number—it is a direct connection to compassionate, accessible care and support for anyone experiencing mental health related distress – whether that is thoughts of suicide, mental health or substance use crisis, or any other kind of emotional distress.

The US Government Substance Abuse & Mental Health Services Administration invites everyone to search SAMSHA 988 Fact Sheet for a pdf document that has more information about this new lifesaving resource.
