School Lunch

Lunch is free again this year, however, you will still need to complete Free and Reduced Lunch Forms for reporting purposes.  This information is valuable for us for grant money and subsidy amounts that the district receives.  Forms are coming home in backpacks.  Breakfast will start at Smith Academy at 7:20 a.m. on Tuesday, September 6th.  It will be planned for HES at later fall start date.

Professional Development

Our teachers and support staff are ready for a new year.  On Tuesday, August 30th we spent the day learning about Multi-Tiered System of         Supports (MTSS) from Dr. Devin Kearns from UCONN.  We are focusing on reading, mathematics and writing with interventions that work.  Our K-8 teachers worked on the afternoon with I-Ready, our new math series for K-8. An I-Ready trainer was on site for this training and they will be doing training throughout the school year.   K-6 Teachers will have literacy training on Wednesday, August 31 that will kick off a full  year of training and consultation on Guided Reading.  These efforts combined with a more robust tracking system will help us monitor and intervene for when students are not making the kind of progress we believe they should.

School Maintenance

The schools look great!  Many thanks to our custodians for their hard work throughout the summer.  (Mark, Mike, Bill, and Bob are ACES when it comes to making sure these buildings are well maintained!)

School Security

As we start the new year, we know that many are mindful of how we work to keep our students and staff safe every day.  We are working to re-key the buildings, institute a more robust entry protocol and add working phones at Smith Academy in every classroom.  With regard to our entry protocol, all guests must enter through the front entry and be "buzzed" in tto the buildings.  We know that this is sometimes awkward, but we really want to make sure our families get well know by the office staff to know who is picking up students.  Please don't be offended if staff or students walk by the door without letting you in, it's not that they don't want to, it's just that we want our protocol to be followed.

New Staff

We are fully staffed as of today with the exception of looking for a Speech and Language Therapist. We have 10 new hires and we will do a review of them in our next update.

Have a great start to the new school year!
